Mesothelioma:Positively Affected by Good Nutrition

From time to time and to stay ahead of the information curve we lend an ear to messages that may not be directly related to weight loss, per se. I was recently approached by Richard Moyle, National Awareness Coordinator for Mesothelioma Center with some interesting data. Since a number of us, just ordinary folks, military veterans, firefighter, construction workers, etc. have had exposure to asbestos we will publish Richard's message, unedited and it's entirety since he has extremely valuable information to share. We would appreciate your comments and feedback.

Here it is:

Asbestos Exposure and Mesothelioma

A naturally-occurring mineral, asbestos was used throughout the 20th century in a number of industrial, military and construction applications due to its innate resistance to fire and highly durable qualities.

Asbestos exposure may lead to the development of several health problems that are both difficult to treat and diagnose.

Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a rare but severe form of asbestos lung cancer. This asbestos-related illness is difficult to treat and diagnose because symptoms of mesothelioma may not show up from 20 to 50 years after exposure.

Manufacturers of asbestos were aware of its harmful qualities, but this information was repressed from the public for decades. Many ordinary citizens, military veterans, firefighters and construction workers have developed related illnesses as a result of their asbestos exposure.

Mesothelioma is cancer of the mesothelium - the thin layer of tissue that lines the area around the heart, the chest cavity, and the abdominal cavity, as well as the outer surface of most of the organs. The only known cause of this type of cancer is exposure to asbestos.

When asbestos is left alone, it is harmless. But if the material is disturbed or becomes damaged, millions of tiny fibers are released into the air where they can then be inhaled or ingested. These fibers become lodged in the tissue of organs (most often the lungs) and can eventually cause a number of illnesses.

If you’ve been diagnosed with mesothelioma, obviously your health and well-being is your first priority. Although mesothelioma is not a cancer that is related to poor nutrition, improving nutritional intake can help mesothelioma cancer patients fight the progressive disease.

The body cannot effectively fight cancer without the right balance of nutrients. In addition, malnutrition causes the body to be vulnerable to infection. Many cancer patients do not pass away from the cancer itself, but rather a medical condition stemming from the body’s weakened condition.

Eating a well balanced diet is vital in preventing cancers and other health problems. Medical experts suggest eating simple organic foods; avoid junk foods; fried foods and make sure to eat the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables every day.

Gene wraps it: Just today I was watching Steve Burd, CEO of Safeway, Inc. being interviewed on health care. Mr. Burd has reduced the health care costs for Safeway employees 25% over the last 4 years by giving them incentives to lose weight, reduce blood pressure, reduce cholesterol and other health related maladies that drive health costs through the roof. He also pointed to the fact that the incidence of cancer is sharply reduced as a result of good nutrition. Richard's comments echo that of Mr. Burd's. So now let's all start to get our healthy house in order so we can be here to attend our Grandchildren's weddings. If you have a comment please feel free to comment here on the blog, to Richard at Richard@asbestos.com or directly to me at gene@myhealthmanagement.com
